HOW NOT TO BACKSLIDE IN A DISCOURAGING WORLD

by - 17:01:00

Times are tough! In Nigeria right now, there’s a recession. In this period more than ever, our faith has being tested, our trust has being stretched, and we have at more times than one; given up, lost hope, and sometimes even questioned God.

It may not be happening to you, but this piece is one from my heart, and I know it’s something a lot of us can relate to.

Life as a Christian can be quite an adventure. There are ups, downs, and unexpected turns. What is Backsliding? I would like to define it from the word itself. In my opinion, when a person backslides, the person is moving backward, sliding down very fast. It’s so much harder to climb than to come down. That means backsliding happens when the person is off guard, little things that you do not pay attention to, can cause you to backslide. Only a Christian can backslide, an unbeliever cannot backslide.

I believe as a Christian one important reason why we backslide is discouragement. The loss of initial excitement can discourage us, delays can discourage us, outside opposition and criticism can discourage us, inside pessimism, comparisons, and faulty expectations can discourage us, a wrong view of success can discourage us, “Poverty can discourage us”.

When a Christian backslides, he falls back into a less desirable condition. His lapse may be a relatively minor one and unintentional. He may simply fall back through neglect by not praying, reading the Bible, and keeping his focus on living for God.

On the other hand, a believer may backslide by deliberately choosing to indulge in this life’s sinful pleasures. This type of backsliding can carry disastrous consequences. It can bring dishonor to Christ. It can also sadden and bring grief to the lives of loved ones. Of course, backsliding can bring turmoil into the believer’s own life. He may be plagued by guilt or even a feeling of despair or condemnation.

There was a time in my life when I didn’t talk to God for months, I didn’t pray neither did I study God’s word. Talking to God felt like an uphill task, the funny thing was, I was still a worker in church, people still looked at me like a good girl, but I knew I was far from God. It was a difficult period, but I thank God He delivered me from the pit.

What do you do in times of Discouragement?
1.     Pray.
2.   Have Faith.
3.   Fix your eyes on Jesus.
4.   Read God’s word and memorise encouraging verses.
5.    Do something, take action, make a move. It is not enough to wish for things to change, find out what you can do to change the situation and do it.

You should know that you are not alone, there are millions of people who are in the same shoes with you, some are even worse off than you, and some are even praying to be in your type of situation. I would have you know that the wisest, most loving, and well-rounded people are those who have known misery, known defeat, known the heartbreak of losing something or someone they loved, and have found their way out of the depths of their own despair.  These people have experienced many ups and downs, and have gained an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, understanding and a deep loving wisdom.  People like this aren’t born; they develop slowly over the course of time.

In case you are backslidden.
Like the parable of the prodigal son, know that the Heavenly Father truly cares about you and wants you to return. He does not post an angelic guard to keep out your prayers and your heart’s cry.  When the Lord hears you calling out to Him, He will respond positively to you.

Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. (James 4:8)

Do not let anything hold you back from God and His forgiveness and grace. Don’t let the pleasures of sin deceive you. In time, sin will bring you pain. Also, do not let doubt or guilt hold you back, for He promises you:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

The Lord’s mercies are new every morning, but do not assume that you are promised tomorrow; talk to the Lord now.
